Horse breeders found flamingos on Lake Bylakh in the Nyurba district, the Yakutia 24 TV channel with the reference to Tarkayinsky village administration.
“The flamingo was found on November 10. At present, we decide his future”, the administration stated.
In turn, “Orto Doydu” (Middle World) Yakut zoo explained they had not have requests on a flamingo transfer, but the zoo is ready to shelter an unusual guest.
Ornithologist of the Institute of Biological Problems of Cryolithozone Yevgeny Shemyakin said that it was the first time for 30 years that flamingo had appeared on Yakutia territory.
“This is an ordinary flamingo – Phoenicopterus roseus. From 1976 to 1989, there were five cases of single birds appearing in the republic. All of them were in late autumn. The birds were severely exhausted, and sometimes they died. Flamingos fly to us, like many other birds, by chance. After all, it happens that people get lost in the woods, so do the birds. They separate from a flock and fly away,” YSIA quoted the scientist.
Flamingos are common in Africa, the Caucasus (Azerbaijan), Southeast and Central Asia, as well as in South and Central America. It is known that flamingos live in large colonies along the banks of shallow reservoirs or lagoons. They mainly lead a sedentary lifestyle, only the northern populations of pink flamingos are migratory.
