Scientists set the Yakutia found cave lions’ death cause
Yakutia 24 TV channel: The Yakut scientists have identified the gender and the death causes of three cave lion cubs, found on the Abyi region area of the republic.
The first lion cub that was named Uyan, was found in 2015, the second lion cub, named Boris, was found in 2017, and the third – Sparta – was found in 2018.
A year after the discovery of the last lion cub carcass, the scientists of the Yakutia Sciences Academy reported on the gender component of the animals found, and also established the causes of their death. This has been possible thanks to a tomographic study.
So, the first two lion cubs are males, and the latter is female.
“Thanks to these tomographic studies, we identified the causes of death for all lion cubs. Uyan lived maximum for a few hours, its mother abandoned it right after birth. Boris was most likely crushed – we found injuries on his head and many bones. The cause of Sparta’s death was extreme exhaustion,” said Albert Protopopov, head of the Department for Mammoth Fauna Study at the Academy of Sciences of Yakutia.
