Russian Natural Resources Ministry proposes to ban reindeer hunting in Yakutia and Krasnoyarsk Territory
Yakutia 24 TV channel reported with reference to TASS: The Ministry of Natural Resources of Russia appealed to the head of the republic, Aisen Nikolaev, and the governor of the Krasnoyarsk Territory, Alexander Uss, with a request to protect the reindeer population.
The analysis of wild reindeer population in these regions indicates long-term recession of the species.
The number of deer on Taimyr island decreased almost twice – to 400-450 thousand individuals for almost 19 years has.
The Natural Resources Ministry said that the main reasons for that were the predatory use of resources, poaching, a high number of wolves and almost year-round industrial shooting. The situation requires urgent measures for conservation and sustainable reproduction of this animal species.
“In accordance with the federal law, the regions have authority to use and preserve hunting resources and their habitats. From the area of my responsibility, I ask you to consider the possibility of introducing a ban on kill of wild reindeer in its seasonal migrations areas”, the statement says.
Nature Minister Dmitry Kobylkin instructed to inform him in the near future about the measures taken and plans for transition of the region to the rational use of wildlife resources.
