Yakutia 24 TV channel: Head of the republic Aisen Nikolaev will discuss issues related to change of the border zone in the region with the head of the RF FSB Directorate on the Eastern Arctic Region Roman Tolok.
It is noted that the existing borders of the republic have lost relevance, since external threats associated with violation of the state border regime in Yakutia are extremely unlikely.
So, many border regions of the Russian Federation have long ago abolished the border regime in their territories at the initiative of residents and the local executive branch.
Despite the fact that the border regime creates administrative barriers for the socio-economic development and traditional activities of the population of municipalities, the region’s leadership has not yet applied to the border department of the FSB of Russia in the eastern Arctic region with proposals to abolish the border zone.
This issue was raised in September 2019 after the detention of three reindeer herders in Ust-Yansky district who did not have identity documents but had unregistered weapons, equipment for extracting fossils, as well as more than 152 kilograms of mammoth tusks worth about 800 thousand rubles.
In view of the Yakuts’s sharply negative reaction to the actions of the border guards in October 2019, the head of the border department of the FSB of Russia for the eastern Arctic region suggested that the leadership of Yakutia initiate the process of canceling the border zone. However, there has still not been a common position among political, public figures and the region’s population regarding the advisability of abolishing the border zone.
It is reported that, on the one hand, the abolition of the border zone will entail increased competition, on the other, it will have a beneficial effect on the economic condition and investment attractiveness of the region, and will also make life easier for local residents.
