Pevek inhabitants celebrated New Year thanks to the presidential grant
The most northern Russian city inhabitants celebrated the Chukchi New Year – Pygetti, which became possible due to the presidential grant, Yakutia 24 TV channel reports with the reference to Interfax.
The holiday organizers think that events like this help to revive beautiful and important tradition of Chukotka indigenous people, integrate it into the modern life and adapt to modern realities”, says the report.
Pygetti holiday marks the beginning of the year, since the length of light starts to gain.
“At the annual press-conference on December 19, Russian president Vladimir Putin said that the study of national cultures, customs, languages should get more attention”, says the agency.
