Yakutia 24 TV channel with the reference to the Republic Ecology Ministry: More than 112 thousand reindeer live in different regions of the republic, a sharp decrease in deer number observed in the Yano-Indigir population.
“The Lena-Olenek wild reindeer population dominates in Yakutia, which is of commercial importance. Hunting on them is the basis of the economic income of nomadic tribal communities in the Olenek, Anabar, Bulun and Zhigan districts,” the report says.
The number of Lena-Olenek population is stable – 84 thousand individuals, according to the results of aerial surveys, conducted in 2018.
The Sundurun population, replenished with deer from the Chukchi population, is also stable. It counts only about 27 thousand species.
A decrease in the number of reindeer is observed in the Yano-Indigir population. In 1982, there were 113 thousand species, in 1996 – 85 thousand, in 2002 – 34 thousand, during aerial surveys in 2012 – two thousand species.
According to 2019 winter route count, the forest zone of Yakutia is home to about 50 thousand species of wild reindeer. This population is important as an object of sports hunting and hunting to preserve the traditional way of life and keep the traditional economic activities of nomadic peoples.
“West” special unit has been created in order to preserve the number and migration routes of the Lena-Olenek and Taimyr deer populations. The World Wildlife Fund has allocated a grant for purchase of fuel and lubricants and sent to the areas for raid activities to protect and monitor wild reindeer.
On January 30, 2019, a special division stopped two heavy trucks at the Olenek-Saaskylakh winter road, seven kilometers from the village. The trucks transported 33 carcasses of wild reindeer and 167 bags of horns weighting in total 5,7 thousand kilograms without permits. A criminal case has been launched in the Krasnoyarsk region.
Yakutia Minister of Ecology Sakhamin Afanasev held a meeting with the Deputy Minister of Natural Resources of Russia Elena Panova, where they discussed issues of protecting wild deer and regulating the number of large predators. Sakhamin also held a meeting with the scientific organizations, and now they are developing a draft plan for restoration of the Yano-Indigir population.
The issue of wild reindeer conservation is under special control of the Head of Yakutia Aisen Nikolaev.
