The four plan to get to Verkhoyansky ulus on bicycles at -45 degrees below zero
Yakutia 24 TV channel: A group of four Japanese students plan to get to Verkhoyansk on bicycles.
Students from Kyoto University came to Yakutia and planned to bike to Oymyakon in February 2018. However, the trip was interrupted due to frostbite, received by a group member. Tourists later admitted that they underestimated the weather and did not take into account 40-degree-below-zero frosts.
“I explained them the features of our climate and the possible problems they may face on way in full, but they are confident enough in their abilities and won’t cancel anything,” Vladimir Vasiliev, First Deputy Minister for External Relations tells us.
The group left Nizhny Bestyakh village on Saturday, February 29. On Tuesday, March 3, students reached the Churapchinsky district and had to go to Ytyk-Kuel village of Tattinsky district.
“They say that haven’t had any problems, the road is good, the bicycles are in good condition. We monitor their movement daily. In the near future, we will most likely warn the administration of the Tomponsky and Verkhoyansky regions so that they are ready to meet them,” Vladimir Vasiliev adds.
The Yakut authorities also warned Consulate General of Japan in Khabarovsk and the staff of the regional rescue service about the travelers.
The Japanese cyclists intend to get to Verkhoyansk, then the two plan to return home, and the remaining two to go from Verkhoyansk to the village of Nizhneyansk, Ust-Yansky district.
