Ecologists say number of bison in Yakutia increases 36% in 2020
Yakutia 24 TV channel: Ecologists of the republic expect 36% increase in forest bison population by 2020 – up to 300 animals.
“The increase in the livestock, currently estimated at 220 individuals, is expected due to the importation of 30 forest bison in spring from Canada and obtaining of their offspring,” says Roman Smetanin, Biological Resources Directorate employee.
According to him, the approximate date of transportation of animals from Canada to Yakutia is March 25. It is planned to send Il-76 from Yakutia to Canada, loaded with empty specialized trailers, that should land in Edmonton, and then head to Elk Island Nature Park, where the bison are located.
“We are waiting for the Canadian side, there is a complex paperwork: now they are waiting for the Eurasian Economic Union’s approval of the veterinary certificate. All countries – members of the union must agree on a certificate, this is a long process,” he concludes.
