Examination of the mammoth skeleton revealed the signs of kill by a man
Fragments of a bone cannon were found in “Mammoth Pavlov’s” skeleton from Kostelny Island; the animal was killed by an ancient man, think the scientists of the region, Yakutia 24 television channel reports with the reference to the Republic Academy of Sciences.
“As soon as the find was brought to Yakutsk, preliminary examination revealed the fragments of a sharp tip in the animal’s shoulder blade. The assumption that the mammoth was skinned by the man’s hands, is also confirmed by the traces of cutting, found on the skull and ribs,” told the Academy.
Examination of the mammoth bones showed numerous injuries in the form of cuts and scratches on the ribs, as well as on the second scapula, frontal and occipital part of the skull – as if people had peeled off the skin and cut the meat from the bones.
“They also cut the trunk, that likely had been considered as a delicacy yet then,” told the press service.
In mid-November, the Yakut paleontologists together with scientists from the Japanese University of Jike, performed a CT scan of the animal’s scapula, which showed a very high probability of the presence of bone tip’s fragment there.
“A fatal blow was most likely made to the abdomen. By analogy with the modern elephant hunters in Africa, who strike precisely in stomach with a spear, which result in the animal’s internal organs injury and peritonitis. Therefore, traces of the man who had murdered the mammoth, have not been found,” the Academy says.
Earlier, Yakutia 24 TV channel reported that in June 2019, paleontologists of the region had discovered a mammoth skeleton with traces of human exposure during an expedition to Kotelny Island.
