About 2 thousand individuals of Siberian Crane registered in Yakutia in 2019
Yakutia 24 TV channel with the reference to the Ministry of Ecology Press Service: About two thousand individuals of the Siberian Crane have been registered on the republic territory in 2019.
According to ornithologists, bird migration in 2019 has been extended. Many couples flew with chicks that have their own pace of flight. During the massive autumn flights in 2017 and 2018, about 50% of the Siberian Crane eastern population flew over the republic.
“We attribute this phenomenon to the successful nesting season of 2019, in contrast to the very few successful ones of 2017 and 2018 seasons due to adverse weather conditions,” said Maria Vladimirtseva, Ph.D and ornithologist.
According to her, adult Siberian Cranes monitors the state of its chicks during the first migration, if the chick gets tired, they land and give it a rest. Scientists often observed separate family groups of three birds – male, female and chick.
“We observed very scarce large flocks of over 100 birds, as in 2017-2018, when the chicks were absent in most pairs,” said Vladimirtseva.
She added that the scientists no observe a high percentage of young birds that appeared in the summer of 2019 after two years, unfavorable for reproduction.
