A student found a petrel in the district of Yakutia
For the first time, the petrel has been found on the territory of Yakutia in Srednekolymsk city of the Srednekolymsky district, Yakutia 24 TV channel reports.
“We set by the photograph that this is the petrel. We contacted the environmental inspectorate of the Srednekolymsky district and are waiting for the bird to be studied at our institute,” said Evgeny Shemyakin, an ornithologist at the Institute of Biological Problems of the Cryolithozone of the SB RAS.
He added that Yakutia is not the habitat of petrels.
“For the first time, a flock of birds was spotted in Kolyma in summer. These birds do not live in Yakutia, the closest border of their flight route passes through the Magadan region. Earlier there were flights to Wrangel island,” told Evgeny Shemyakin.
According to TASS, a freezing petrel was discovered on November 11 by a student of 11th grade of the Srednekolymsk school. Now the school teachers and students take care of the bird.
Nesting areas of petrels are located on small islands in the southern Pacific and Atlantic oceans, primarily near New Zealand, the Falkland Islands and Tierra del Fuego, the Arctic Ocean and the Bering Sea.
Earlier, Yakutia 24 TV channel reported that on November 11, horse breeders discovered flamingos on Lake Bylakh, Nyurba district.
