A new protected area to preserve wild reindeer population to be created in Yakutia
Yakutia 24 TV channel with the reference to the Ministry of Ecology Press Service: A specially protected natural area of at least 65 thousand hectares will be created in the Bulun region of the republic in order to preserve the wild reindeer population.
“A new protected area is being created in order to preserve the broodstock of wild reindeer of the Lena-Olenek population in the place of mass calving and feeding of young animals on the southern slope of Chekanovsky Ridge,” the report says.
According to the experts, the creation of protected area should be the main compensation measure to replenish the declining territory of “Beke” national reserve, hunting on which is the basis of the traditional way of life, primarily for the indigenous peoples of the Olenek district.
It is reported that in 2018, the Ministry of Ecology, Nature Management and Forestry of Yakutia together with the Institute of Biological Problems of the Cryolithozone of the SB RAS conducted an air-visual count of wild reindeer of the Lena-Olenek population. Accounting covered the territories of Anabar, Bulun and parts of the Olenek and Zhigansk administrative regions.
The count established that the Chekanovsky ridge is currently the only place for calving, summering and feeding of young Lena-Olenek population, and it needs serious protection, to preserve and grow up the wild reindeer population.
