The first ever fine for fake news imposed in Russia
Yakutia 24 TV channel with the reference to RIA Novosti: The first fine in Russia for abusing freedom of the media was imposed in Moscow.
The Moment of Truth publishing house was fined 200 thousand rubles (without confiscation), and the chief editor – for 60 thousand rubles. Magistrate’s Court of the Khoroshevsky District of Moscow made the verdict.
The defendants in the case were informed of the proceedings, initiated by Roskomnadzor, but they did not appear in court.
An article on liability for publishing fake news appeared in the Administrative Code of Russia in March; no media was fined before.
